Examples of telekinesis

Telekinesis is the ability to move objects with the mind.

Characters

• Brian Davis is the first character (chronologically) to demonstrate this ability.
• Sylar acquires telekinetic abilities after murdering Brian.
• Peter Petrelli has absorbed this ability from Sylar and reproduced it.

Limits

Telekinesis requires active concentration.

Brian Davis had extremely limited telekinetic ability. With concentration, he was able to move a cup slowly across the surface of a table. Brian was afraid of his power, and never tried to develop it.

Sylar has demonstrated far more advanced telekinetic abilities than Brian, probably because Sylar has actively developed the power. He can exert enough telekinetic force to flip a truck through the air or tear sheet metal, and he has enough control to cut off the top of a person's skull to expose the brain. He can simultaneously manipulate dozens of objects at once, as when he lifted shards of broken glass, oriented all of them to point away from him, and flung them across a room with deadly force (.07%).

Peter Petrelli is more powerful than Brian was, but not as adept as Sylar; he was able to stop Claude from striking him with a mop handle and throw Sylar across a room.

Sylar did not use his power directly against Peter after he turned invisible (.07%), suggesting that the target of this power must be visible to the user (if not actually in line of sight) or its location must be clearly known.

Selected Examples

• Sylar hurls people over long distances, including Audrey (One Giant Leap), Claire (Homecoming), and Mr. and Mrs. Bennet (Distractions).
• Sylar uses telekinesis to slice the foreheads of some of his victims, including Jackie (Homecoming) and Peter (.07%).
• Sylar rips metal doors off of lockers at Claire's school, then throws them at Peter. However, none of the doors actually strike Peter, which may indicate that he is using the same power as well, if only reflexively. (Homecoming)
• Brian moves a cup across a table in Gabriel Gray's watch repair shop. (Six Months Ago)
• At Chandra's apartment, Gabriel Gray (Sylar) moves a glass across a desk, but loses control of his newly acquired power and accidentally smashes the glass into a wall. (Six Months Ago)
• Sylar pulls Eden through the security glass of his cell. (Fallout)
• Peter blocks a swing from Claude and later tosses Isaac around his studio. (Unexpected)
• Sylar uses telekinesis to escape Mohinder--he stops a bullet, turns off his IV, and unstraps himself from a chair. (Parasite)
• Sylar levitates dozens of glass shards, orients them all to point away from him, and sprays them across Mohinder Suresh's apartment. (.07%)
• In a possible future, Peter uses the power on several occasions. He moves a drink across the table and moves a armchair aside. Later, he tosses a Homeland Security guard out of his way. (Five Years Gone)
• Sylar telekinetically flips an armored vehicle carrying Ted, and rips the doors off their hinges. (Landslide)

Memorable Quotes

"We've pieced a trail across a dozen states. All people impaled by household objects. Bones broken. All without any traceable sign of physical contact. But only some of them involve any mutilation of the head or neck, so they don't see the connections."

- Audrey (to Matt) (One Giant Leap)

"Brian Davis, you think he's ... telekinetic? Moves things with his mind, or are you just gonna toss him aside too?"

- Sylar (to Chandra) (Six Months Ago)

Notes

• Chandra Suresh referred to Brian Davis's power as "telekinesis". The Mozaic file mentions "psychokinesis". In common usage, the two terms often refer to the same power.
