Can we use this anywhere?

I made this little "BrowseAll" template yesterday,

Browse All edit
Episodes Webisodes Graphic Novel
(which is what got me into messing with collapsible tables), because I wanted a one-stop-shop kinda point of quick-reference to be able easily jump to any episode or GN and either its main-page, or its image-page...without having to drill through other pages, and menus, etc...and also that would list the numerical value of each epi/gn because sometimes folks refer to them that way, and I can't always remember what number is what, and have to go digging to find it.

I made this as a template, with as small a footprint as possible, and am now using it on my userpage; but was wondering if there would be a place on the main board this would be useful for with other members. Any ideas? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/13/2008 11:05 (EST)

  • It needs a little bit of cleaning: I would put the full number of the episodes, so 308 for Villains instead of just 08. The first three S2 episodes need to have space between the episode name and the "images" link. Shouldn't we italicize the episode and graphic novel titles, and not italicize the "pages" and "images" links? I would also switch the order of the rows: put the episode number, then the title, then page link (but I would call it "episode page" or "graphic novel page" or something) and finally the image page. Finally, the bottom needs to be rounded. Nice job putting War Buddies, Part 7 in two spots--looks great.

After that, where do we put it? I don't really know. I like it a lot. Hmm. Let me think for a bit and work on it when I get home from work tonight... -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 11:14, 13 November 2008 (EST)

    • Point 1) I started with the season number '308' in the numbering, then realized after I had them all entered, that it looked redundant, since they are grouped by season, and when you're in the 'Season 3' list, you know 08 is I took the season-prefix off, to let the season heading handle that.

Point 2) I agree about italicing the title, and normalling the 'page/image' links...will do that.

Point 3) I also started with it ordered as number, epi, page, image; but since the episode names are all different sizes, it makes it very unreadable that way; in this order, every thing is in clean, straight columns...I was trying for a more sophisticated template that was quick and clean; and that is why I tried to mimimize extra redundant text in the rows...('Page' instead of 'blah blah page', etc...) because after a few uses, it would be easy for anyone to catch on to how it works. It's really intended to be a fast, quick-reference tool from getting to where you want to go.

One thing I wish I could figure out how to do with the collapsible table feature, is remove the forced double-space (extra blank row) between each table...who is our resident wiki-code expert who might know if this is doable? --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/13/2008 11:26 (EST)

      • I'd suggest perhaps considering to add it to Heroes, and I agree you should make it display as initially collapsed as it's rather big. Ryan said he'll work on it tonight for you, but if you want to try yourself here's a couple tips: 1) remember that a header row is always required for collapsible tables to work properly, and 2) it's a good idea to always put a width= attribute to prevent shrinking...if you look at the code on the Nielsen Ratings article, that could help you with the spacing issues.--MiamiVolts (talk) 12:07, 13 November 2008 (EST)
        • Just consolidated the 'Page' link into the title name, and also moved the image link to the end, after the title as Ryan suggested. Will let it set now, and let you guys think more about it, and see if others comment. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/13/2008 12:24 (EST)
          • I think that's a good change. I like the "images" link afterwards, but perhaps you should make another column so that the "images" links are all lined up. See below for an example. I also think that the number of the season should precede the episode number for easy reference. I know they're grouped by season, but an extra number doesn't hurt--in fact, just as you said, HDS, it's not always easy to remember the number of the episode. Including the full call number will help, especially when the full number is needed for things like template:epp and template:image-screenshot. Miami, you're absolutely right--the Heroes article would be perfect for this template. -- RyanGibsonStewart (talk) 16:14, 13 November 2008 (EST)

  • Yep, much better....except the show/hide button is doing some odd jumping around; and not staying in position...gonna try to figure that out. --HiroDynoSlayer (talk) 11/13/2008 17:35 (EST)
    • As I pointed out above, the show/hide button jumps around because the size of the tables are changing when you alter it to be collapsed vs. uncollapsed. You might not think they are resizing cause the inner tables have no borders, but they are resizing. Give every wiki table that you make collapsible a width="100%" attribute and you can remove that resizing feature.--MiamiVolts (talk) 19:11, 13 November 2008 (EST)
